TYPES OF AUTO GLASS DAMAGE
Chicago roads are tough on windshields. Between gravel trucks on the expressway, potholes launching debris, and harsh winter freeze-thaw cycles, auto glass damage is one of the most common vehicle issues we see at SK Auto Body. Understanding the type of damage you have helps determine whether you need a quick repair or a full replacement.
Windshield chips are small impact points where a rock or piece of road debris struck the glass. They often look like a small star or bullseye. Cracks are lines that spread across the windshield, sometimes slowly growing over days or weeks — especially when temperatures swing from freezing nights to warm afternoons, which happens constantly in Chicago winters. Shattered glass occurs from major impacts like collisions or attempted break-ins and requires immediate full replacement.
Damage is not limited to windshields. We replace side windows (both front door and rear quarter glass), rear windows, and back glass with defrosters. Whether a stray baseball cracked your rear window or road debris chipped your windshield on the Kennedy, we handle it all.
REPAIR VS. REPLACEMENT
Not every chip or crack means you need a brand-new windshield. Small chips and cracks under six inches can often be repaired with professional resin injection, which restores structural integrity and prevents the damage from spreading. A good repair is invisible to the eye and costs a fraction of full replacement.
However, some damage always requires full replacement. Spider web cracks — where multiple cracks branch out from a single impact point — compromise too much of the glass surface to repair safely. Edge cracks that reach within two inches of the windshield frame always need replacement because the structural bond between glass and frame is compromised. Long cracks over six inches, damage directly in the driver's line of sight, and any damage that penetrates both layers of laminated windshield glass also require full replacement.
When you bring your vehicle to SK Auto Body, we will honestly assess whether a repair will do the job or if replacement is necessary. We never upsell you on a replacement when a repair would be just as safe and effective.
OUR GLASS REPLACEMENT PROCESS
- Assess the damage: We inspect the glass thoroughly, checking the type, location, and severity of the damage to determine if repair or replacement is needed.
- Source OEM-quality replacement glass: We order glass that meets or exceeds original equipment manufacturer specifications for your exact vehicle make and model.
- Remove damaged glass safely: The old windshield or window is carefully cut out and removed without damaging the surrounding frame, paint, or trim.
- Clean and prep the frame: All old adhesive residue is removed and the pinch weld is cleaned and primed to ensure a proper bond with the new glass.
- Install new glass with proper adhesive: We use factory-specification urethane adhesive to set the new glass, ensuring a watertight and structurally sound seal.
- Allow proper cure time: The adhesive needs time to reach full strength. We will let you know the safe drive-away time — rushing this step can compromise the seal and your safety.
- Quality check for leaks and fit: Every installation is inspected for proper alignment, seal integrity, and any water leaks before the vehicle is returned to you.
SAFETY MATTERS
Your windshield is not just a piece of glass — it is a critical structural component of your vehicle. In a rollover accident, the windshield provides up to 45% of the structural support that keeps your roof from collapsing. In a front-end collision, a properly bonded windshield helps direct the force of airbag deployment toward the passenger rather than blowing outward through a weak seal.
Improper glass installation is dangerous. A windshield that is not bonded correctly can pop out during an accident, turning a survivable crash into a catastrophic one. That is why we use factory-specification adhesives, follow manufacturer installation procedures, and never cut corners on cure time. Your safety depends on the quality of this work, and we take that responsibility seriously.
